Independent Travel in Europe
Europe....Your Way!
Tips and resources for independent travellers
Ladies - In general, European women tend to dress up more than North American women, so having a few accessories will go a long ways to adding flair to your travel outfits. Scarves are probably the simplest to use and will definitely do the trick. If you haven't already tried a Pashmina, you may want to experiment with one before you go - it can be worn as a scarf or a shawl in a variety of ways. Dark, travel skirts and casual pants work really well because you can create a number of outfits just by switching tops. You shouldn't have to bring a dress, even for going to fancy restaurants or concerts. Jeans are definitely okay for cooler weather, as long as they are a medium to dark shade and are not baggy or shabby - they need to look neat and fashionable. You can easily pull together a stylish look with your jeans by wearing a white blouse and a blazer (or dark, tailored jean jacket) and a scarf - it's all in how together you look - you don't want to feel frumpy. A note on shorts: You won't see very many European women wearing shorts, unless they're on the beach, jogging, or on a hiking or cycling trail. In a nutshell, if you want to be identified as North American, wear your shorts!
Packing: Deciding what clothes to bring with you
Regardless of the season, you may want to consider bringing long underwear with you - both top and bottom, if you're planning on heading up into the mountains. The best are made of thin, lightweight material - you can even wear them under a long skirt on a cool morning. I like the kind that are made of silk - they are extremely comfortable and are warm without being bulky.
If you're planning on visiting churches, you will need to be prepared to cover up sleeveless tops or dresses (having a shawl in your daypack will come in handy). Women should wear skirts or dresses that are at least knee length, or long or capri pants. Men should wear long pants, and a respectable shirt or t-shirt (no sleeveless tops). Men can wear shorts if they are knee length (Bermuda shorts).
Again, for cooler days or mountain excursions, you'll need a jacket. We have found that the kind with a removable lining that doubles as a fleece vest works well for us. We also like the option of unzipping the sleeves. Depending on where you are, you may find that you need a lined jacket in the early morning, but by mid-morning you might just need the vest or no jacket at all.
A good rule of thumb is "casual chic".
Gentlemen - In general, European men tend to dress up more than their North American counterparts. You won't see many of them wearing shorts, unless they are on the beach, jogging, or hiking or cycling. Having said that, on hot days you may see some of them in walking shorts (knee length). In warm weather, it's definitely okay to wear shorts, as long as they are not too short and they are clean and tailored - you may prefer shorts that allow you to wear a belt. One easy solution is to have a pair of pants that quickly converts to shorts - there are a number of travel pants with exactly that feature. Or, in warm weather, just wear, light-coloured lightweight pants. Packing both crew neck and golf t-shirts is a good idea. There's no need for a dress shirt and tie for restaurants - casual shirts are okay as are medium to dark jeans that look neat or a pair of dark, casual pants. Ensure that clothes are neat. A dark turtleneck for cooler days is also a great choice.
For both guys and gals
Footwear is very simple - you want all your footwear to be comfortable and sturdy. One pair of good walking shoes, one pair of walking sandals, and possibly a second pair of shoes in case your other pair gets soaked! If you're planning on staying in hostels or other accommodations with shared facilities, you might want to bring a pair of rubber or plastic shower shoes. If this is starting to sound like a lot of footwear, just keep in mind that you'll be wearing a pair on the plane :)
Bring socks and underwear that are quick-drying - no more than three or four pairs of each. Travel socks and underwear are ideal. You want anything that you wash in the evening to be ready to wear in the morning.

If you'd like to bring a sunhat, you might want to consider a packable hat. TravelSmith offers packable hats for both men and women. You can also pack a Tilley hat by placing it upside down in your suitcase and packing small, rolled up items inside it and packing items around it.

Note: Vatican City is now enforcing a revised dress code which includes covered shoulders, skirts that are at least below the knee, and long trousers for men. The new dress code applies to both St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica.
