Nordic Walking
Nordic walking/Urban poling, or walking with poles, is extremely popular in Europe, especially in Germany, Switzerland, and the Scandinavian countries. During our trip to Germany in 2006, we noticed a lot of people Nordic walking on walking paths in Bavaria -- enjoying the spectacular Alpine views as they were reaping the benefits of this low-impact fitness activity. My curiousity was piqued -- they were obviously having a great time while exercising and taking in the views. In 2009, we saw a number of people Nordic walking in the south of France along walkways by the Côte d'Azur -- working out while enjoying the sun, sea breeze and Mediterranean vistas. Nordic walking can be enjoyed by people of all ages and most fitness levels. It combines the upper-body workout of cross-country skiing (Nordic skiing) with the lower-body workout of regular walking and increases your oxygen intake, heart rate and caloric expenditure. The poles, which have rubber boot tips, propel you forward and alleviate the pressure on the ankles, knees and hips. Nordic walking is flexible in terms of where it can be done. In urban settings, participants walk with their poles in city parks and on sidewalks and roads. By removing the rubber boot tips and using the steel tips, it can also be done on other surfaces such as gravel, dirt, and sand.
