Independent Travel in Europe

Tips and resources for independent travellers
Bus Travel

The cost of inter-city train tickets in Europe can sometimes be quite expensive - that's why you might want to consider using bus networks instead. European bus travel is usually comfortable and cheaper than travelling by train. Bus stations are usually located in city centres and bus routes may take you through areas that you wouldn't see on a train - small towns and rural areas that you would not have otherwise explored. Sometimes there is no train service to your destination, so you'll need to check bus routes and schedules.

Bus travel does have its drawbacks, though. Buses are not always air-conditioned and potentially much slower - you may need to allow for much more travel time than you would if you were riding the trains. In some countries, schedules are reliable, but this isn't always the case, especially in southeastern Europe. When comparing the cost of taking the train versus taking the bus, also compare the travel time required - if the train takes two hours and the bus takes six, you may want to take the train since this will allow you an extra half day of relaxing and exploring. It's sometimes best to take the train even though you may pay a bit more. Your choice will depend on your schedule and priorities.

Eurolines is a consortium of over 30 coach companies and serves 34 European countries. Offers 15, 30 and 45-day passes. The Eurolines passes also allow you to book hotels at discounted rates.
Busabout offers travel services in a pre-determined circuit - this is the main difference between Eurolines and Busabout. The circuit includes 36 cities in the following 12 countries: Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, UK, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
National Bus Services

Individual countries also operate national bus networks, and if you are only travelling within the borders of one country, it is worth looking into that country's national bus service.
