Belgium: One Country, Many Cultures

Guest post by Marina Cangelaris.
In my recent visit to Belgium I was very impressed by the variety of culture that exists, especially in its capital, Brussels. The already existing division between the French-speaking part and Flanders sets the start for this diversity. The fact that Brussels is also a very big center for the European Union and other International NGOs also contributes to the international environment that exists in the city. Moving out of the capital, one notices the people live very close to nature, and the cities and towns have kept a very traditional architecture.
Brussels is a relatively small city, and you can reach most of the sites on foot or on bicycle. The classics are the Grand Palace with the Town Hall - make sure to take a close look at it when you get there, you may notice something peculiar. Another classic is the Manneken who's costume changes on various days of the year. Don't miss the Gallery where you can do you shopping. A metro ride away from the center you will find the Atomium, which was built for the World Expo of Brussels. Take the elevator to the top  for a view over the city. While walking around the capital of Belgium, you will find comic strips on the walls of buildings. Try to count how many you can find - it can be fun!
While I was there, I also visited Bruges, which is in the Flemish part of Belgium. A very touristic, yet very historical town. A stroll around its narrow streets will lead you to various sites that are worth a visit. One of them is the Belfry, located on the Markt. If you are brave enough, climb its 366 steps and get a beautiful view of Bruges and its neighboring towns. After that, reward yourself with Belgian fries or a waffle, or both! Walking towards the city walls, you will find Bruges' oldest pub, dating from 1515. I totally recommend it. For warm sunny days, it also offers a garden for you to enjoy your Belgian beer.
